Emily Carr University’s Great Northern Way Campus Breaks Ground

April 24, 2015

On April 24, 2015, BC’s Advanced Education Minister Andrew Wilkinson was on-site at Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s new Great Northern Way campus location to mark the start of construction of the new campus. He was joined by members of the team selected to design, build, partially finance, and maintain the new university, Applied Arts Partners, as well as by students, faculty, and alumni of Emily Carr.

Designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and Chernoff Thompson Architects of Applied Arts Partners, the new campus at Great Northern Way will accommodate 1,800 students and provide facilities that will attract students on the national and international levels. The final design will strongly correlate with its vision as a learning community devoted to excellence and innovation in visual arts, media arts and design.

Some of the design features include:

  • State-of-the-art technology that will allow for integrated displays for learning and interaction;
  • Student common spaces that will be open and flexible to encourage inter- and intra-disciplinary collaboration;
  • Exteriors that will be outfitted with state-of-the art technology to allow for public programming and outdoor spaces to be illuminated.
