Floating Homes

Since 1981 Chernoff Thompson Architects have designed a wide variety of floating homes. We bring careful planning skills to maximize space usage, solid understanding of weight and balance, technical issues, and a respect for the unique community aesthtic of the floating home marinas.



Slightly Floating Home   Vancouver, BC

A new Coal Harbour residence designed to replace the previous floating home that tragically capsized during a winter storm. The immaculately designed interior includes a main floor with living spaces and upper floor with bedrooms. Space is optimized through planning and sharing of adjacent areas and the incorporation of two decks and a roof top patio to create the perception of a larger home.




Carson Residence   Vancouver, BC

A new Granville Island residence designed to meet the changing space needs resulting from a growing family. A partial basement for a family room, main floor with living spaces and upper floor with bedrooms are provided. Space is optimized through planning and sharing of adjacent spaces to create a perception of a larger home. A key feature of the design is the use of natural light and contact with surrounding seascape and Sea Village homes.


Floating Residence   Vancouver, BC

A 116 sm (1,250 sf) private floating home in Sea Village at Granville Island, Vancouver, BC. The home features two bedrooms, an open plan with central open stair and energy efficient design. The detailing and overall appearance incorporate nautical imagery.


Floating Residence   Vancouver, BC

A 112 sm (1,200 sf) private floating home for people who have a boat and love the water. The design creates a strong relationship between interior spaces and the marine environment. An exterior hot tub and deck space provide an outdoor living area close to the water for the owners.


Wesdel Marina Model Home   Delta, BC

A design for a model home of 127 sm (1,368 sf) for Wesdel Marina in Delta, BC. The home incorporates generous natural light throughout the interior and provides excellent outside access onto decks beside the water.


Floating Home   Delta, BC

A 112 sm (1,200sf) home designed for the Brightwater development in Annacis Channel in the Fraser River. The octagon shaped stair tower recalls light house imagery appropriate for a marine setting.



"The Ark"   Delta, BC

A small 42 sm (450 sf) floating home with a loft on a 15 foot by 20 foot wood pontoon. The plan is designed to be an efficient, compacy layout with a sense of space and close relationship with adjacent water surroundings. Careful placement of windows brings light into the home and provides good visual contact with the waterscape.


Sanctuary Cove Floating Homes  Brisbane, Australia

An eighteen unit floating home community involving the design of four floor plans with alternate elevations as part of a large development at Sanctuary Cove near Brisbane in Australia. Chernoff Thompson Architects developed a site layout for the homes, and designed a floating dock system.
