Kwantlen Horticulture Lab Awarded LEED Gold
February 4, 2014
The Institute for Sustainable Horticulture lab at Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Langley Campus has been awarded LEED Gold. On January 31st, the plaque was unveiled by BC Minister of Environment Mary Polak. "It’s particularly challenging to obtain the standard on laboratory facilities, so this is quite an accomplishment for all involved,” says Polak.
Karen Hearn, executive director of KPU’s facilities, says “The achievement of LEED Gold for a small research lab was only possible through the design team’s expertise, persistence with exploring creative alternatives and commitment to creating a highly sustainable building.”
Designed by Chernoff Thompson Architects, the ISH lab sustainable features include 50% reduction in landscape water usage, over 75% of construction waste diverted from the landfill, and the use of renewable energy for 50% of the buildings’ energy consumption for the first 2 years.
