Chernoff Thompson Architects has designed major buildings on 16 Higher Education campuses including, the University of British Columbia, the University of Northern British Columbia, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, the University of the Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island University and the University of Washington. Our work includes design, construction documents, tendering, and contract administration services for various buildings on these campuses. Wood Innovation and Design Centre
University of Northern British Columbia
 Prince George, BC

A 6-storey 4,057 sm design-build timber building, the WIDC was designed to provide space and a wood engineering lab for the University of Northern British Columbia, plus office space for lease out. The project was designed using an Integrated Design Process in which 3D Revit modeling was a key tool in producing a highly integrated building solution. A fly-through animation was produced which takes the observer around the building exterior and through its interior spaces. Watch Video

 

 

 

 

Student Centre
University of the Fraser Valley
 Abbotsford, BC

The 7,640 sm (82,240 sf) Student Center is a one stop shop that contains numerous student services and activities including Student Life, CIVL Radio Station, SUB Office, Alumni, Campus Card, Cascade Newspaper, Aftermath Pub, Career Centre, Aboriginal Resource and a multi-faith room. There is also a sub-dividable 465 sm (5,000 sf) multi-purpose hall. The organization of space is around a 3 storey atrium which is filled with ample natural light and is ideal for student gatherings.

 

 

 

 

Asian Centre
University of British Columbia
 Vancouver, BC

Revitalization the exisitng 30 year old roof and skylight system. The restoration created a more durable building and improved internal thermal comfort, in addition to protecting its valuable historical collections housed within. Roof anchors, life-line and steps were provided to enhance longevity of the new roof by providing proper maintenance means, snow guards were added. The restoration adopted the vertical visual aesthetics – simple and clean roof lines with functional protrusions – all of which are elements found in traditional Japanese architecture.

 

 

Learning and Innovation Centre
Royal Roads University
 Victoria, BC

The building comprises 5,924 sm (63,765 sf) over three to four storeys and provides contemporary educational technology and learning facilities. The Academic Building contains classrooms, seminar rooms, undergraduate labs, academic offices and meeting rooms. The project is certified as a LEED™ Gold Project. This is a JCTA project.

 

 

 

Podium 2
Simon Fraser University
  Surrey, BC

This dynamic renovation of over 4,320 sm (46,500 sf) is a LEED™ Gold project and provides new teaching labs for biology, chemistry, physics and kinesiology as well as seven new general classroom spaces. Also provided are research laboratories for leading-edge research in interactive arts and technology, visual analytics, cybercrime, kinesiology and computer science; other research areas include space for research in health. This project was done in collaboration with RavenDesign.

 

 

 

 

Bob Wright Centre
University of Victoria
 Victoria, BC

A 12,685 sm (136,541 sf) new wet/dry laboratory building to accommodate a wide range of teaching and research activities. The initial uses include teaching, labs, research labs & offices for earth and ocean sciences, chemistry and astronomy, plus large lecture theatres. Included is a facility program concurrent with the schematic design which incorporates modular generic concepts that facilitate flexibility for users, planning and access to services.

 

 

Kwantlen Horticulture Research Facility
Kwantlen Polytechnic University
  Langley, BC

This building provides space for laboratory research of horticulture themes and includes insect rearing labs, incubation rooms, insect and microbiology labs, and associated support spaces. A greenhouse using geothermal climate controls was also included. This is a GOLD LEED™ project.

 

 

Visual Arts Redevelopment
University of the Fraser Valley
  Abbotsford, BC

This multi-phased project includes complete refurbishment of an existing trades facility into teaching facilities for the visual arts program, including printmaking, photography, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. A new wing of general teaching classrooms and faculty offices was also constructed.

 

Cafeteria Redevelopment
University of the Fraser Valley
  Abbotsford, BC

A complete refurbishment of the main campus kitchen and servery which included updating the servery to allow for contemporary food options and increased efficiency flow-through of customers. A modern bistro style interior design was incorporated. This project was constructed in a very compressed time-frame during a short summer shut-down.

 

 

 

Sturgeon Research Centre
Vancouver Island University
  Victoria, BC

A 2-storey research facility for sturgeon studies with specialized tank facility on main level and administrative office/meeting space on 2nd floor. Despite its tiny scale and compact massing, the color pattern that represent the harmony of earth, water and sky, and its artful articulation of fenestration for the façade create an attractive and outstanding building at the campus’ highest point. This is a JCTA project.

 

TASC 2 Wet & Dry Laboratory
Simon Fraser University
  Burnaby, BC

A 12,674 sm (136,420 sf) new wet/dry laboratory building, for highly specialized research laboratories including life sciences, materials research, computer stations, and clean rooms. The design incorporates a generic, modular, highly flexible approach to the building layout and services. The building includes two major public spaces which provide naturally lit transition and gathering spaces for the enjoyment of users.

 

 

 

 

Trades & Technology Centre
University of the Fraser Valley
  Chilliwack, BC

The University of the Fraser Valley acquired an 34 hectares (85 acres) land parcel in Chilliwack to replace their existing Chilliwack campus. The parcel is part of the Canada Education Park and used to be a military base. The building contains automobile mechanics, heavy-duty mechanics, autobody, welding shop, carpentry and plumbing, electrical and electronics shops, culinary and drafting. The building is approximately 929 sm (10,000 sf) with a central atrium/cafeteria, as well as significant outdoor yards.

 

 

 

 

Medical Science Building
University of Victoria
  Victoria, BC

A 4,040 sm (43,486 sf) building that houses medical teaching and research as part of the UBC undergraduate physician training program. Key features of the building include lecture theatres, laboratory, and gross anatomy lab facilities. The building provides space for conventional teaching, small group distance education seminars, faculty office and flexible research labs. This building was awarded GOLD LEED™ certification.

 

Benjamin D. Hall Interdisiplinary Building  Seattle, WA

A new 13,576 sm (146,130 sf) research building using a design/build/operate and manage for 30 years project delivery model. The design was a collaboration of Chernoff Thompson Architects and Collins Woerman Architects. This building has achieved GOLD LEED™ certification.

 

 

'DTO' Facility
University of Northern British Columbia
  Prince George, BC

A $5 million expansion to the Teaching Laboratory Building at University of Northern British Columbia. Includes conventional classrooms and teaching computer labs, as well as two sloped floor lecture theatres and a two story open student space.

 

 

 

Teaching Laboratory Building

A 6,038 sm (65,800 sf) teaching laboratory for the University of Northern British Columbia to accommodate undergraduate teaching space for science and social science departments. The approach to this building is to provide generic infrastructure and space to optimize flexibility for future uses and to accommodate interdisciplinary use of the spaces for maximized class scheduling opportunities.

 

 

Coordinating Architect
University of Northern British Columbia

As Coordinating Architect, we were closely involved with the architects responsible for the Administration Building, Conference/Fitness Centre, Laboratory Building, Library and Student Services Buildings. On completion of the initial campus construction, the firm has provided ongoing consulting on the campus master plan.

 

 

 

Agora Extension
University of Northern British Columbia

With the addition of a new Laboratory Building to the UNBC Campus, the covered pedestrian circulation needed a 1,858 sm (20,000 sf) expansion to accommodate campus traffic throughout the year and to create new conference, meeting facility to support campus activities with a focus on celebrating science.

 

 

Physical Plant
University of Northern British Columbia

The Physical Plant Facility provides the source of power, heating and cooling for the entire University of Northern British Columbia Campus. The facility is designed to be expanded as the campus grows and has space reserved for a cogeneration engine.

CICSR/CS Building
University of British Columbia
  Vancouver, BC

This is a 9,847 sm (106,000 sf) computer research & teaching building for CICSR (now ICICS) and the department of Computer Science. A portion of the building includes undergraduate classrooms and computer labs. The design incorporates recessed windows for weather protection, precast concrete and porcelain metal exterior finishes and landscaped sloped entry walkways to provide full accessibility to the main entry.

 

 

 

Integrated Science Centre
Vancouver Island University
  Nanaimo, BC

A proposed new 4,250 sm (45,750 sf) Integrated Science Centre & 3,700 sm (40,000 sf) Western Campus Redevelopment Project to provide new and renovated facilities for the University to accommodate additional student spaces. The vision is to maximize the integration of Science and Technology programs, currently housed in four separate buildings, into a new Integrated Science Centre.

 

 

Teaching Building
Justice Institute of British Columbia
 Chilliwack, BC

The new academic building, approximately 2,500 sm (27,000 sf), will be the first teaching building on the JIBC Chilliwack Campus. The building provides a new training home for paramedics, emergency management and leadership courses. It is also designed to respond to the local Aboriginal heritage and culture.

 

Student Accommodation
Justice Institute of British Columbia
 Chilliwack, BC

This is the first operational building in the new Chilliwack Campus of JIBC in the Canada Education Park. The existing 1990's military dormitory was renovated and upgraded to provide 102 suites including 53 ensuites, 48 sleeping units with shared bathrooms and 1 fully accessibly suite. A multipurpose student gathering space was added with extensive glulam structure insulated translucent panels and glazed wall that captured natural light and landscape view.

 

 

 

 

Trinity Western University  Richmond, BC

Trinity Western University Richmond campus is located on the 3rd and 4th level of the podium, developed by Phileo Development. The 1,858 sm (20,000 sf) facility will contain classrooms, resource support and gather spaces for students on the 1st level. The 2nd level will feature a Centre of Dialogue which provides space for faculty/staff meetings, students gatherings, chapel and conference meetings. Concept design only.
